Why NAS is still a popular choice for many

Data block chain

Network Attached Storage or NAS is a file-level computer data storage server connected to a computer network that allows PC's or laptops to share and access data over the network and provides one central point for all your data/pictures/documents. It’s an intelligent hard disk storage system with its own network address rather than being attached to any computer. It has its own software for configuring and mapping file locations to the network attached devices.

While technology is advancing and more people and businesses are switching to the cloud, NAS is still a popular choice among many business owners.  They are cost and space efficient and it’s easy to increase the storage capacity if needed with the addition of more hard disks.  With greater demands being put on businesses, storage capacity is usually the first thing that needs managing and with the cloud there are additional costs involved and high-capacity cloud storage can start to become very expensive.

And while some may worry about the security of NAS if it’s accessible over the public internet, it’s an easy fix to safeguard with a VPN (virtual private network).  A VPN extends a private network across a public network and enables users to send and receive data across shared or public networks as if their computing devices were directly connected to the private network.

Having a mix of both the cloud and NAS is a good balance to ensure storage and back up requirements are satisfied within a business set up. If you would like to discuss the best options for your business, please get in touch with us.  We’d love to help you out.
