AI and Cybercrime

As cybercrime constantly evolves, so too do the means to combat it.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) isn't new. However, Google is leveraging its power to deliver better search results, and improvements in AI are paving the way for better scam detection and protection.
The Enhanced Protection mode in Google Chrome — the browser's highest level of security — is now even more robust thanks to Gemini Nano. This on-device AI model provides near-instant analysis of potentially malicious websites, offering users real-time protection from phishing and scam attempts. Currently available on desktops, this AI-enhanced protection is also being used to detect and prevent remote tech support scams, one of the most prevalent online threats.
Recognising that scams can also be delivered through push notifications, Google is introducing AI-powered notification warnings for Chrome on Android. The system uses on-device machine learning to flag and warn users about spam or misleading notifications from websites. Users can then choose to unsubscribe or continue viewing content — with complete control to allow future notifications if a warning was shown in error.
With scam tactics increasingly shifting toward phone calls and SMS, Google is stepping up protections on Android devices through its AI-powered Scam Detection features in Google Messages and the Phone by Google app. This on-device intelligence helps identify and alert users to suspicious communications before they escalate into serious threats.
We will never be without scammers or cyber threats. But by integrating cutting-edge AI across its products, Google is raising the bar for online safety.
